मीनाक्षी अम्मन मंदिर: आँखें बंद करिए। कल्पना कीजिए एक ऐसा स्थान जहाँ हवा में घुली धूप के कण मंदिर के गोपुरमों से टकराकर सुनहरी हो जाते हों। जहाँ हजारों दीपकों की रोशनी में नाचते छायाचित्र देवी-देवताओं की कथाएँ सुनाते हों। जहाँ तोतों की बोली में “मीनाक्षी अम्मन” का नाम गूँजता हो। यह कोई काल्पनिक दृश्य नहीं, बल्कि मदुरै के पावन मीनाक्षी मंदिर का रोजमर्रा का नज़ारा है।
1. प्रवेश: चौदह गोपुरमों का रहस्य
जैसे ही आप मंदिर के मुख्य द्वार पर पहुँचते हैं, 52 मीटर ऊँचा दक्षिणी गोपुरम आपको अपनी ओर खींच लेता है। इस पर उकेरी गई हजारों मूर्तियाँ आपसे बातें करने लगती हैं, कहीं कृष्ण की बाल लीला है, तो कहीं रावण द्वारा कैलाश पर्वत उठाने का दृश्य। विशेषज्ञ बताते हैं कि इन नक्काशियों को बनाने वाले कारीगरों ने विशेष प्रकाश व्यवस्था का ध्यान रखा था, सूर्य की रोशनी जैसे-जैसे घूमती है, मूर्तियाँ जीवंत हो उठती हैं।
गोपुरम क्या है?
गोपुरम (Gopuram) दक्षिण भारत के मंदिरों में बना एक विशाल पिरामिड आकार का प्रवेश द्वार होता है, जो मंदिर परिसर की भव्यता और दिव्यता का प्रतीक है। यह केवल एक द्वार नहीं, बल्कि देवलोक और मनुष्यलोक के बीच का सेतु माना जाता है।

- संस्कृत के शब्द “गो” (ब्रह्मांड) + “पुरम” (नगर) से बना है, यानी “ब्रह्मांड का प्रवेश द्वार”।

मंडप में प्रवेश करते ही आपका स्वागत करता है एक अद्भुत ध्वनि, पत्थरों का संगीत। जी हाँ! यहाँ के हर स्तंभ को थपथपाने पर अलग-अलग सुर निकलते हैं। पुरातत्वविदों का मानना है कि यह प्राचीन एकॉस्टिक इंजीनियरिंग का चमत्कार है। एक स्तंभ पर हाथ रखिए, शायद वही सुर निकले जो 400 साल पहले किसी भक्त ने सुने होंगे।
3. वह स्थान जहाँ देवी रोज सोती हैं
रात 9 बजे का समय। मंदिर के पुजारी सोने के महल से भगवान सुंदरेश्वरर को शयन कक्ष तक ले जाते हैं। यहाँ एक अद्भुत परंपरा है – देवी मीनाक्षी का पलंग भगवान के पलंग से कुछ इंच ऊँचा रखा जाता है। स्थानीय मान्यता के अनुसार, यह स्त्री शक्ति के प्रति सम्मान का प्रतीक है। आसपास के बाजारों में आपको मिलेंगी सोने-चाँदी की छोटी पलंगियाँ – भक्त इन्हें खरीदकर मन्नत माँगते हैं।
4. तोता जो बोलता है देवी का नाम
मंदिर के पूर्वी भाग में स्थित है तोता मंडप। यहाँ के हरे-हरे तोते सचमुच “मीनाक्षी अम्मन” बोलते हैं! पुजारी बताते हैं कि ये तोते विशेष प्रशिक्षण से गुजरते हैं। सुबह की आरती के समय जब ये पक्षी देवी का नाम लेते हैं, भक्तों के रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते हैं।
5. वह कुंड जहाँ दिखता है भविष्य
स्वर्ण कमल तालाब के बारे में एक रोचक मान्यता है – यदि कोई भक्त इसके जल में अपनी छवि देख ले तो उसकी मनोकामना अवश्य पूरी होती है। पर क्या आप जानते हैं? इस तालाब का पानी कभी नहीं सूखता, चाहे मदुरै में कितनी भी भीषण गर्मी क्यों न पड़े। वैज्ञानिकों का मानना है कि यह भूगर्भीय जलस्रोतों से जुड़ा है।
6. विश्व का एकमात्र ऐसा मंदिर जहाँ…
- देवी की प्रतिमा के हाथ में है तोते का पिंजरा
- भगवान शिव की मूर्ति के पैरों तले नहीं है राक्षस (अन्य शिव मंदिरों के विपरीत)
- मंदिर के गर्भगृह में बनी है गुप्त सुरंग (कहा जाता है कि यह रामनाथपुरम तक जाती है)
7. एक दिन मीनाक्षी मंदिर में: समय की अनुभूति
सुबह 4 बजे: गर्भगृह के पट खुलते हैं। देवी को चढ़ाया जाता है मदुरै के विशेष मल्ली पुष्पों से सजा हार।
दोपहर 12 बजे: भगवान सुंदरेश्वरर को चढ़ाया जाता है पन्ना (हरा) रंग का वस्त्र – यह रंग स्थानीय जलवायु के अनुकूल माना जाता है।
शाम 6 बजे: मंदिर की छाया बनाती है एक अद्भुत आकृति – सूर्यास्त के समय गोपुरम की छाया देवी के चरणों में समा जाती है।
8. क्या आप जानते हैं?
- मंदिर के कुछ गोपुरम 3 डिग्री झुके हुए हैं – भूकंप से बचाव के लिए बनाया गया प्राचीन डिजाइन।
- ब्रिटिश काल में अंग्रेजों ने इस मंदिर को “बम्बू हट” (Bamboo Hut) नाम दिया था – उनकी डायरियों में यह उल्लेख मिलता है।
- मंदिर के पास के बाजार में मिलता है दुनिया का सबसे छोटा शिवलिंग (चावल के दाने पर उकेरा गया)।

- पहनें पारंपरिक वस्त्र – मंदिर में शॉर्ट्स/स्लीवलेस की अनुमति नहीं।
- जरूर खरीदें मदुरै मल्ली की माला – देवी को चढ़ाने के लिए विशेष पुष्प।
